"I have business elsewhere, with a better class of person..."

With the upcoming release of film next year, I re-read the graphic novel, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. I've been a fan of the novel for over seven years and it's just one of those books that gets better over time. I never thought this book would ever come to celluloid because, for the longest time, I felt the book was "unfilmable." When the trailer came out for Dark Knight, I was stood out of my chair and cheered in amazement and shock! Afterward, I wrote a synopsis of the character in my blog. It was high time I drew something to show my immense love before the film amassed a new following. If you haven't read the book, please do and check out the new trailer!

(Doomsday Clock countdown until the movie premiere is a hundred days, huzzah! This is for Serrifth, the illustrious founder of Gunga Diner, and this is her favourite character, too! We did a little RP together. We made Rory cry... :XD:)

By day, Walter Joseph Kovacs, the abused son of a prostitute, is a disturbed, apathetic, vacant-faced, anti-communist, anti-liberal, right-wing paranoid absolutistic and objectivistic alexithymic who is always seen carrying a sign about him that reads "The End is Nigh" and, by night, he becomes the ruthless, uncompromising self-declared criminal investigator known as Rorschach, wearing an ink-blot mask which he considers his true face, who leads a one-man battle against crime long after costume vigilantes became both detested and illegal. He sees crimes as clearly defined as either right or wrong, good and evil, black and white; there is no grey area! It does not matter that you stole a loaf of bread to feed your family; you committed a crime and, as a criminal, should rightfully and violently punished!

(I drew this at two in the morning, coloured it at three, and posted it at four. I didn't feel like being a perfectionist about the colouring, but I rather like the messiness of it. This is the first time I've used gradient fill tool on anything. Aren't you proud?)

Medium - Photoshop, 2B mechanical pencil.

You should. I highly recommend it. I think you'll enjoy it immensely.

I just saw your quote: "Dog with head split open." Fascinating... simply fascinating.

Who was the author again?
:iconmlle-relda:
Yes, I go by "Dog With Head Split Open" at Watchmen forum and at the Gunga Diner DA club. It's a scene in the novel where Rorschach discusses his origins to a psychologist who he basically drove insane.

The book was written by Alan Moore (V For Vendetta, From Hell, Swamp Thing, etc.) and art by Dave Gibbons (Superman's "For the Man Who Has Everything", Batman vs. Predator, Doctor Who).

V for Vendetta! Yes, I was going to say, the character of Rorschach reminded me of V.

Thanks so much :D I'll look out for this book!
:iconmlle-relda:
I love V for Vendetta, a beautiful book. Comparatively, V is a terrorist, chaos incarnate, striving against fascism for true, uncontrolled anarchy; but, as an individual, he's quite controlled and centered. Rorschach is order to the extreme measure, although he himself is chaotic mess -- he's slobby and quite smelly -- but his perspective of "justice" is warped but understandable. Neither one of them compromise and the results are both violent.

I can't wait to get my hands on this book now; it sounds like a great psychological study as well as a novel. I love meaning and depth in a plotline, as well as original characters.

Simply can't thank you enough- you've put so much detail into your replies! :D
:iconmlle-relda:
Oh, then you'll love this then! Not only is it a psychological study of characters, but society as well. It's a very complexly layered story, full of intricate themes, symbolism, imageries, ironies, social commentaries, philosophies, and emotions.

And you're welcome! If you can spare a few dollars, I recommend the (international) hardcover edition; it's a $35 cheaper alternative to the $75 coffee-table Absolute Edition. The printing is of a higher quality and colours more versatile than the paperback, done in the manner of how the artist and colourist originally intended it to be.

And once you finish, I'd love to discuss the novel with you. It's great to hear a fresh perspective of the book.

That's a good Rorschach spoof. Loved the comic, but until the movie was released I didn't see much with fan-art/spoof.

Sweet heaven, I see the light.
I feel...love and life; sun and shine.
But here in this Hades I cannot touch...
The forbidden angels of love cannot save me.

I see the demons of your hell.
I kiss the angels of your despair.
