"Yeah, those were great times, Rorschach. Great times..."
I messed up on a Rorschach in Gotham piece that was meant to be uploaded at Valentine's, but Rorschach ended up completely out of character and the entire piece was ruined. Le sigh. On the upside, I did another commission for fellow Watchmen fanatic, Lady Rorschach, and I really loved the way it came out. It's pure silliness and doesn't makes sense in continuity, but I makes me giggle every time and that's what counts! Her scenario went like this: "The elderly, retired crime-fighter Hollis Mason (Nite Owl I) gives a pair of opera tickets to his protège, Daniel Dreiberg (Nite Owl II), but no one on the Crimebusters team wanted to go with him, so Walter Kovacs (Rorschach) was dragged with him. Formal tuxedos is must!" I wanted to make Rorschach look very sour and he had to be in pinstripes (of course), and I wanted Dan looking fabulously tacky in ruffles it's the '70s, come on! And he's Jewish, I couldn't help it! Very fast and loose. Medium - 5B graphite. Nite Owl (II), Rorschach © DC Comics. Comments

-- -Thanks for the icon Mllle- Relda!- ________________ "Nervous?" "Well, my stomach feels weird and my ball's are all shrivelled up, so yeah I guess "nervous" will do." -Daniel and Rorschach. _____________ Captain Metropolis in the Gunga Diner. Ah, musicals! I'm a huge fan of musicals.
Just to get it out of the way, of course, is Phantom of the Opera. But I hate the film adaption (no one can sing in that film!), I hate the original Broadway cast (Michael Crawford is a wailing cat and Sarah Brightman cracks constantly), my love goes to the Canadian cast, with Colm Wilkinson has the most powerful and unique voice, very soothing, and Rebecca Caine is a real opera singer who shocks you with her sheer powerful (and no cracks): - "Phantom of the Opera" - "Music of the Night" Another musical to get out of the way, Sweeney Todd. I loved this musical for years, well before Tim Burton. I DO NOT LIKE THE FILM! They editted half the play out! How could you forget the chorus? People quit steady jobs in order to be in the chorus of Sweeney Todd, damnit! Best cast is 1980s live performance with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn (BEST TODD EVER). Johnny Depp was okay, but Hearn is why I fell in love with it: - "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" - How the beginning is suppose to be... - "Poor Thing" - The overall brutality of the flashback gives me chills! - "A Little Priest" - So much funnier, I think, than the Burton film. - "Epiphany" - Wooooowwww! Another great musical is Jekyll and Hyde. Can you tell I love dark musicals? Best cast is the original Broadway cast with Robert Cuccioli in his duel role as Jekyll and Hyde, and the fabulous Linda Eder. - "This is the Moment" - Robert Cuccioli is great! - "Someone Like You" - Lucy thinks Dr. Jekyll may be the "one" for her. Linda Eder is simply DIVINE! - "Dangerous Game" - Hyde brutalises Lucy. I mean, BRUUTALLLL! Then there's the unstaged production of Nosferatu the Musical. Fairly unknown as he was never but on stage, I believe, but several nice tracks despite it. It would have been a great musical. With Peter Karrie. - "Somewhere At The Edges of Creation" I love Kander and Ebb! I was introduced him them through Cabaret. It's one of the few instants where the FILM is superiour to the original musical. Story-wise is one of the best musicals. It's socio-political satire and farce. It's dark, it's gritty, but the music is lively and drips with bitting irony. Interestingly, the songs are all played on stage, not in real life context of the film, moving from "film" to "stage" as the story goes along. Film cast is the best, hands down, with Liza Minelli and Joel Grey who was in the original Broadway cast also as the Master of Ceremonies; he won a Tony and a Oscar for the same role: - "Willkommen" - The Master of Ceremonies introduces you to the Kit Kat Club. Here, life is beautiful! - "Money, Money, Money" - Sally meets a millionaire and hopes to capture him for herself. - "If You Could See Her Throw My Eyes" - Ending comment is "She won't look JEWISH at all..." Love has no prejudice. Basically, he's giving Nazi Germany the middle finger as he sings this... (Sorry, can only find a Spanish dub.) More Kander and Ebb. This time it's Chicago! Film was okay, but what brought it to the Silver Screen was the 1990s revival show, which had the best cast. Saw this on Broadway, AWESOME! With Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking who also choreographed the show. She really did bring Bob Fosse's style back to Broadway: - "All that Jazz" - Velma Kelly introduces the musical. There's Jane Eyre. My mother's favourite book. I got into the book through her. Seen perhaps every film and TV production. And it was adapted into awesome musical, with James Barbour and Marla Schaffel: - "Sirens" - WOW! A Cinderella stories at it's best are My Fair Lady and Gigi....expect, the endings suck! Oh, well. Great musicals though! My Fair Lady is where a cockney guttersnipe goes to a Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins, a tyrant of a man, to learn to talk proper so she can move up the strict Victorian class structure. Best musical version is with Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison; the film which is great is with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. - "On the Street Where You Live" - Hey, it's young Jeremy Brett, pre-Sherlock Holmes...however, he was dubbed without his knowledge, DAMN! Gigi, well, I'm amazed it got passed censors with it's insinuations of pedophilia and prostitution. Gigi is a underaged, free-spirited courtesan-in-training groomed to be used as a mistress to some of the most wealthiest and powerful men in Paris, yikes! But...it's SO sweet and endearing! I don't understand it myself. The film is best, with Lesile Carson, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis...something. YT deleted all the songs, sorry. Here's a fun one -- 1776. Yep, it's about the creation of the Declaration of Independence. Love this musical! It's so funny and amusing. I love that Benjamin Franklin is just a hedonist. Although my favourite character is John Adams. Always sympathised with that man. The film production is good, except for one thing. I hate the women who play Martha and Abigail. Abigail cracks several times that it hurts. Martha...well, I think she screwed a producer in order to get into that film. Best cast, 1990s Broadway revival, with Brent Spiner (yes, the guy who plays Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation). Unfortuntely, no clips of that on YT, so I'll have to show you the film version: - "The Lees of Old Virgina" - John Adams and Ben Franklin convince (or FLATTER) Richard Henry Lee to propose independence in Congress. - "But, Mr. Adams" - John Adams wants a Declaration of Independence, but since he's hated in Congress, he can't write it, so he asks (or really ORDERS) his colleagues to do it. - "The Egg" - Deciding the national bird -- the dove, the eagle, or the turkey? And then, there's Parade. Based off a true story where a successful Jewish factory manager from Georgia is falsely accused and convicted of a rape-and-murder of a teenage African-American girl who worked for him. After spending two years in jail, his case was going to be re-reviewed, but before that could happen an angry mob abducted him from his cell and lynched him. Original Broadway cast, with Brent Carver and Carolee Carmello. - "It's Not Over Yet" - Frank's devoted wife sends him a message in prison. Is there still hope? - "All the Wasted Time" - Cries! One of my top ten favourite musicals is RENT. I've been in love with this musical for, oh, almost a decade! I like the film actually. They went out their way to cast most of the original Broadway cast. I personally prefer the Broadway stage version because aspects of it translated better on stage than on film. This is modern retelling of the opera, La Bohéme. I can't really explain the story because there's SO MUCH to say. You just have to watch it and see! It's truly an OPERA. Best production, original Broadway cast; second best, the 10th anniversary production, third best...the film, lol! - "Seasons of Love" - Really sums of the show. - "One Song Glory" - Roger has lost his girlfriend to suicide after they found out they were HIV-positive. He wants to write one song, to make a mark on the world, before he dies. - "I'll Cover You" - Both HIV-positive, Tom and Angel (drag queen) fall in love and proclaim their love. - "La Vie Boheme" - The residents of Avenue A insult the straights that want to kick them out of their neighbourhood. MY ALL-TIME FAVOURITE MUSICAL OF ALL TIME IS NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS. There are no words to describe how utterly AWESOME this show is. It's an internationally famous, multi-award-winning French-Canadian show that went world famous in just a few years. What I would give to see it live! Definitely my left kidney. Back to the play, as Victor Hugo's book to music, this play has EVERYTHING -- drama, suspense, action, tragedy, dance, love, hate, sex, jealousy, loss, faith, obsession, character, dangerous acrobatics, living sets, etc. It is perfection at its best! The cast is amazing because they aren't actors. They're all singers, all famous. Garou (a voiec of gravel) and Bruno Pelletier (a voice clear as a bell) are contemporary singers; Daniel Lavoie is the "Barry Manilow" of Québec; Luck Mervil is a rock star from Haiti, and they all came together to do a musical of all things! And it's a hit! I swear by this musical! To call it a "musical" is underrating it, it's an OPERA really!. This is not Disney! Disney sucks compared to Notre-Dame de Paris! CREATED BY: Riccardo Cocciante (music), Luc Plamondon (lyrics). BEST CAST/RECORDING: Live show in Paris, with Garou, Daniel Lavoie, Bruno Pelletier, and Hélène Ségara. FAV SONGS: Every song is a masterpiece, which is rare for me, because I usually hate a few songs in the play, but I love and adore each song: - "Le temps des cathédrales" - The poet Grégoire introduces to the play. I was a fan of Bruno's before this. Beautiful voice! The song gives me chills every time! - "Belle" - Quasimodo, Frollo, and Phobeus sings about Esmeralda. Perhaps the most famous song in the opera. - "Tu vas me détruire" - Frollo obsesses over Esmeralda, so passionate, so CREEPY! - "Libérés" - Quasimodo stops Frollo from raping Esmeralda and frees her from the Palace de Justice. Love the dancers here! - "Dieu que le monde est injuste" - The most depressing song ever! Quasi mourns that he's not worthy of Esmeralda because of his ugliness, tears! - "Danse mon Esmeralda" - Quasi, cradling a dead Esmeralda in his arms, cries and dies of a broken heart. I break into tears every time! -- "P-p-please, Eddie, you know there's no justice for toons anymore? If the weasels get their hands on me, I'm as good as dipped" (Roger Rabbit). A few more favourites:
Fiddler on the Roof - Just CHARMING all around. - "I I Were a Rich Man" - "The Wedding Bottle Dance" - Best part of the movie! Lion King: The Musical - A musical spectacular of the Disney film. I have no words! - "Circle of Life" - "They Lives In You" Wicked - The music is better than the play, lol, I feel. Although, a lot of people to argue with that. A retelling of the Wizard of Oz with the Wicked Witch of the West as...misunderstood. - "Popular" - Glenda tries to make Elphaba pretty. - "Defying Gravity" - Basically a "fuck all of you" song from Elphaba. Idina Menzel started loosing her voice around the ending cords. Pity. Evita - Andrew Lloyd Webber's other success, but was overshdowed by Phantom. I love this musical a lot. The film is great, better than the play. You can't beat Madonna, even if Antonio Banadras cracks twice, it's still great! Eva Péron's rise from prostitute, to model, to actress, to wife of a dictator. - "Another Suitcase" - Eva tricks a man to take her to Buenos Aires, but if dumped quickly after, and she has to survive, somehow. - "Goodnight and Thank You" - Eva finds her niche: She uses men to get on top, lol! - "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" - Her speech as the new First Lady. West Side Story - Another one of my brother's favourite musicals. Romeo and Juliet in New York with street gangs. - "America" - My favourite song! You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown - If you love Peanuts comics, you'll love this! Very sweet musical! A live-action Charlie Brown animated film...to music! - "My New Philosophy" Spamalot - Monty Python on Broadway, lol! Went to New York the first time and this was the musical I saw! I wanted in line for 5 hours for standing room tickets. It was worth it! With the original cast -- Tim Curry, David Hyde Piece, Hank Azara, well before Clay Aikin butted in. It was awesome! - "Find Your Grail"! Hair - My brother's favourite musical. I like half the music and dislike the play; he loves everything about it. - "The Age of Aquarius" - "Sodomy" - How the hell did this film get a rated G on the DVD? - "Hair" Little Shop of Horrors - Love and adore the play and film! What? You don't like giant talking-and-singing venus flytrap from space? Well, why not! Definitely one of my favourites! - "Skid Row" - "Somewhere That's Green" - "Feed Me" - "Suddenly Seymour" Avenue Q - Rated-R Sesame Street on acid right here! The cast of live-action actors and puppets, many of them were former Muppeteers. - "It Sucks To Be Me" - "The Internet Is For Porn" Hedwig and the Angry Inch - OMG! I saw this on stage and was BLOWN away! Off-Broadway smash about a young German boy who fell in love with a American solider, but the only way he could get to the U.S. as a "wife" was to pass the a physical exam. So he had transsexual surgery, which was botched, leaving him with a one-inch penis, "The Angry Inch", and Hedwig was born. She was to be a rock star, but just about her climb of success was going to lift off, her music was stolen by her lover who now has made millions off her music. Hedwig, through the play, tells her story and suffers an emotional breakdown in the end, finding acceptance with who she is...and what she is. This is up there with my favourites, with RENT and Notre-Dame de Paris. The play is better than the film, but it has the same cast basically. All the music in the live was done live, sounds just like it would on stage -- but it doesn't have the same...FEEL of you actually being there with living and breathing Hedwig. - "Tear Me Down" - About herself. - "Origin of Love" - And the journey of finding our other half. - "The Angry Inch" - Origin of the "Angry Inch". - "Wig in a Box" - Her husband, the solider, runs off with another, younger lover, leaves Hedwig all alone and scared, and she goes off to find herself. - "Wicked Little Town" - Breaks my heart. Let's get out of Broadway and into film! Classic film because Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly are GODS! My favourite Fred Astaire films: - "Drum Crazy" - from Easter Parade (my favourite film of his) - "We're a Couple of Swells" - from Easter Parade - "Steppin' Out With My Baby" - from Easter Parade - "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" - from Shall We Dance - "They Can't Take That Away From Me" - from Shall We Dance - "Pick Yourself Up" - from Swing Time - "Cheek to Cheek" - from Top Hat - "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails" - from Top Hat - "Hat Rack Dance" - from Royal Wedding My favourite Gene Kelly films: - "Singin' in the Rain" - from Singin' in the Rain (my favourite of his films) - "Moses Supposes" - from Singin' in the Rain - "Good Mornin' - from Singin' in the Rain - "Make 'Em Laugh" - not Gene, but the great Donald O'Connor, just too amazing to pass up, from Singin' in the Rain - "New York, New York" - from On the Town - "I Got Rhythm" - from American in Paris - "I Like Myself" - from It's Always Fair Weather - Awesomeness! -- "P-p-please, Eddie, you know there's no justice for toons anymore? If the weasels get their hands on me, I'm as good as dipped" (Roger Rabbit). What opera? I wasn't really thinking of which when I was drawing at the time. But now as I think of, I'd say it would be Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) because it has cute birds in it.
- "Papageno sings his song to search for a wife" - "Papageno and Papagena find each other at last" -- "P-p-please, Eddie, you know there's no justice for toons anymore? If the weasels get their hands on me, I'm as good as dipped" (Roger Rabbit). |
